Brake Rotors – These days many shops replace rotors automatically and don’t even have a brake lathe for machining rotors. Often, the rotors being installed are not coated for rust resistance like the OEM ones, not premium quality steel like the OEM ones, and not casted with OEM ventilation designs for optimum cooling. Each vehicle manufacturer publishes a specification on how far a rotor can be worn or machined prior to needing replacement. No. You do not always need new rotors, but you do need a straight and flat raw metal finish on your rotors to allow proper break-in or activation of the new brake pad compound. Without this raw finish, the effectiveness of your new pads will be significantly diminished which can cause safety hazards like extended braking distance. At minimum, the rotors need to be professionally machined and ideally honed prior to installation. Some rotors cannot be machined, and in those cases, you will need new rotors for break-in of your new pads.
